What Is In My Heart?
I woke up one morning hoping that everything I had seen and heard the night before had only
been a nightmare. Sadly, it hadn't been a dream. It was my reality.
The news about George Floyd, the case of Vanessa Guillen, the increasing number of deaths as a result of COVID-19, the sickness of my loved ones, and the injustice in my community left me in tears. Reflecting on all these events I asked God, “Lord, what do you think about all of this? How does this make you feel?”
I don't doubt God's goodness because I know His nature is loving, kind, and gracious! I know this because I have seen Him work powerfully in my life and because the Bible tells me that God has always provided salvation for humanity. So, what in the world? What is the problem? Why is life so unfair? Why does racism still exist? Why do evil things keep happening? What is wrong with people?
Friend, here’s the thing. The root of everything is the heart. Yes, the heart. Actions and words flow from it. If we want bad things to stop happening in the world, we need to ask ourselves: what is in our heart?
As long as we live in this world, our hearts will always be exposed to hate, resentment, anger, frustration, lust, greed, and all kinds of bad things. But…(there is always a but)... when we live in God, our hearts can be filled with love, happiness, peace, tranquility, contentment, and all kinds of good things. How can we be sure of this?
Psalm 103:5 tells us that God “satisfies our desires with good things so that our youth is renewed like the eagle's”. The world is never going to be perfect because human beings are imperfect. We have all kinds of desires. We are crazy! (I don't know about you, but I am nowhere near perfect.) Therefore, evil will always exist. Evil does not come from God. It comes as a result of human choices, influenced by the devil. However, when our hearts become filled with God’s love, we will truly see change. Why? Because the love of God compels us to love like He loves. If God has chosen not to give up on humanity for thousands of years, why should we give up on our neighbor?
We need to have God’s love in our hearts in order to manifest good things and contribute these to our communities. If you begin to love the way God does, you will provoke a change in your home and your environment. Your family members and friends will provoke a change in others, and the spread of God’s love will be inevitable. People will begin to see you and wonder, “How can I love the way she does? How can I be more like this guy who is always treating people with respect?” God’s love in your heart is what you need. So, if you ever feel sad by the bad things happening in this world, ask yourself, “What is in my heart? How can I provoke a change?”
